902 Man Up

Raising responsible men, advancing the community, and ending gun violence.

Our story

902 Man Up is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 2016 in response to the increase in community violence particularly involving black males. We are primarily dedicated to the advancement of all Black communities within Nova Scotia and will focus particularly on the empowerment of young black males. The expanded mandate of 902 Man Up includes all individuals or groups at risk of marginalization and social and academic exclusion. Gun violence disproportionately affects Black communities and we face persistent systemic challenges, from limited access to quality education to the devastating impact of gun violence. These challenges require urgent action and sustained investment. 902 Man Up believes that change starts with empowering our youth and creating pathways for success that ripple through the entire communities.

The Original Black Communities

Nova Scotia, Canada, has a rich and complex history of Black settlement that spans more than 400 years. The province is home to over 50 historic Black communities, many of which were founded by Black Loyalists, Maroons, and Black Refugees who arrived between the 18th and 19th centuries. This website is part of the efforts of 902 Man Up to document, preserve, and celebrate these historic communities Their stories are not just about struggle, they are about triumph, legacy, and the ongoing fight for justice and recognition.

These communities collectively represent the enduring presence and contributions of African Nova Scotians to the province’s history, culture, and society. They are part of Nova Scotia’s deep connection to African heritage and resilience. Despite facing systemic racism, land inequities, and economic marginalization, these communities have preserved their unique culture, traditions, and sense of identity.
