After a series of shootings in 2016 plagued an already marginalized neighbourhood in Halifax, Marcus James and a few of his peers looked within to find solutions to deep-rooted problems in the community. Fast forward a couple of years and the group of volunteers at 902 ManUp has now become an integral part of the neighbourhood culture in Halifax’s downtown. A temporary shelter will be set up at the Halifax Forum by 902 Man Up. It will have 50 beds to begin with but plans to expand to 70. Marcus James, the co-founder of the organization, says the group will not bend on its rules to prevent drug use at the shelter — even if it deters some people from moving there. #shelter #homeless #housing
In our continuing investigation into the school-to-prison pipeline, The Objective interviewed Marcus James, president and founder of 902ManUp. James’s started the organization in 2016 in response to the increasing violence in the Black community. 902ManUp is dedicated to empowering Black youth through mentorship and guidance. Their approach to minimizing the violence is simple; to tackle the root issues that cause of violence in the first place. The four pillars to 902ManUp are to address the failing education system, underemployment, the biased justice system and lack of physical and mental health resources for young Black youth. Marcus has been involved in community work for most of his life, including going directly in the prison system to offer support to Black men. Of all of The Objectives interviews, Marcus is the only one on street level to witness the end result of the school-to-prison pipeline. His words for Black parents that have children in the public school system is harsh. “Our communities-our young people through the educational system are being pimped-bottom line.”
